'Eat, Pray, Love': discover the locations of the blockbuster movie with Julia Roberts
Many of you have seen the movie ‘Eat, Pray, Love’ with Julia Roberts (if not, hop on to Netflix and watch it!!). The best and last part of the movie - of course the part ‘LOVE’- was shot in my beloved Bali.
Are you also curious where exactly the movie was shot in Bali? Do you want to visit all the locations and experience the ‘LOVE part’ yourself? Please continue reading!
FIRST THINGS FIRST
Hate to burst your bubble, but there are a few things you should know before we proceed:
The movie came out in 2010, already 10 years ago. Over the last 10 years, Bali has gotten much busier and more tourists have discovered the island. So some of the locations you saw in the movie, are looking different now or are much busier than it looks like on screen.
A few locations you see in the movie, don’t exist in real life as they were specifically made/constructed for the movie.
LOCATIONS FROM EAT, PRAY, LOVE IN BALI
Most of the Bali locations for ‘Eat, Pray Love’, were filmed in and around Ubud, the cultural heart of Bali.
The beach scenes were shot at Padang Padang, on South Bali's Bukit Peninsula.
JULIA ROBERTS’ VILLA IN UBUD
GOOD NEWS! You can actually stay here! You can book it on AIR BNB for a very small price too!
Also a quick reminder that the accomodation was ‘pimped’ for the movie, so don’t expect the same luxurious decor.
You can book it on AIR BNB HERE.
THE RICE TERRACES WHERE JULIA ROBERTS WAS RIDING HER BIKE
Wanna see his? Go to the Tegallalang Rice Terraces in Ubud.
NOTE: It’s super crowded these days, there are many other rice terraces way less visited by tourists than these ones. If you wanna go, GO EARLY! Or go to Campuhan Ridge Walk instead,If you want to get great perspectives.
THE BEACHBAR AND BEACH SCENES
The beach scenes were shot at Padang Padang, on South Bali's Bukit Peninsula.
If you walk down to Padang Padang beach, looking for the bar where Javier Bardem and Julia Roberts met, you will be dissapointed. The bar was constructed only for the movie. The beach however, is very pretty and accessible for everyone (small entrance fee tho).
UBUD MARKET
The Ubud Market, who’s real name is Pasar Seni, is located just across the road from the Ubud Palace. It is a bustling market that sells everything from clothes, sarongs, souvenirs, and handcrafts. It is not the best market, but, it`s still a fun place to find some bargains and buy some souvenirs to bring home as gifts.
KETUT AND WAYAN: THE HEALERS
The two Indonesian people that helped Julia Roberts in her healing process, are easily found in Ubud. Both receive(d) large numbers of EPL fans and have (had) lucrative livelihoods because of it.
Ketut Liyer The real Ketut died in 2016. After the book came out, he was in huge demand for an audience from Westerners. Most paid US$25 or more for a short session. The actual Liyer compound, was used in the movie, although Ketut was played by a schoolteacher from Java.
Wayan Nuriasih: Wayan now operates an extremely successful traditional Balinese healing center on the Northern edge of the town centre of Ubud, just off JL. Raya Ubud on Jl. Jembawan (2 doors down from Radiantly Alive Yoga Studio). Her center is very humble and you would almost miss it if you are not focused. There is only a faded sign above and the below information outside (see picture). If you are thinking of visiting her, you can read a review HERE.
